Episode 3
abandoned alaska: Through the lens of Paul scannell
October 20, 2020
In the face of great personal loss, Irish photographer Paul Scannell leaves London and eventually finds his way to the Wrangells in remote bush Alaska. Skipping his flight home, Paul is drawn to the crumbling, abandoned places in the Wrangells and the stories that these remains suggest.
We discuss Paul’s journey. We talk iPhones and writing and narrative photography, and we also hear readings from Paul’s new book, Abandoned Alaska: Copper, Gold, and Rust (2020).
In this Episode
Paul Scannell: Professional photographer, Wrangell Mountains Center 2019 Meg Hunt Artist in Residence, and author of the new book Abandoned Alaska (2020)
Jon Erdman: Interviewer, Producer, and Wrangell Mountains Center Executive Director
Kevin MacLeod: Music, see attribution, below
Jon spoke with Paul in August, via Zoom. Paul was in London and Jon was at the Old Hardware Store with bush planes buzzing above. In 2019 Jon accompanied Paul on two trips exploring the abandoned mines, Jumbo and Bonanza, as Paul captured photos that would eventually become material for his new book, Abandoned Alaska. Jon and Paul met during Paul’s first summer in the Wrangells, back in 2016.
