Joe Barrington, 2014 Artist in Residence

Applications are now open for the 2015 Meg Hunt Residency Program. To get the juices flowing about what you can do with two weeks at the Wrangell Mountains Center I am going to share blog posts about our 2014 Meg Hunt Residents over the next month. You can learn more about the program and find a link to the application here.

Joe Barrington was our first artist in residence last summer from May 26 – June 8. He is a full-time sculptor from Throckmorton, Texas who explores man’s relationship to and impact on the natural world with his work. Joe often creates large-scale sculptures in welded steel, but was interested in working with found objects, especially natural materials in McCarthy. He combined driftwood, willow, and metal scraps to create two ravens that now live in front of the Old Hardware Store.

To introduce his work to the community, we held a First Friday gathering in June to “unveil” the sculptures and meet Joe. I know that residents of the Hardware Store and our neighbors love to watch people walk down the street, discover and interact with Joe’s work.
